How does an Americano work?
The Americano is the most popular padel tournament among friends. Everyone plays for themselves: each round you get a new partner and new opponents, until you have played with everyone. A match is played to a total number of points, often 16, 21, 24 or 32. Playing to 21, a 13-8 gives 13 points to each player on the winning team and 8 to each loser: every point counts, even in a lost match. With 8 players there are 7 rounds of 2 matches, and the standings add up each player’s points.
And the Mexicano?
The Mexicano counts points the same way, but the teams are not set in advance. The first round is drawn at random; after that, players are ranked by the standings, and each group of four puts 1st with 4th against 2nd and 3rd. Matches stay close right to the end, and you can stop whenever you like.
How many players, courts and points?
You need 4, 8, 12 or 16 players for an Americano, and a multiple of 4 up to 16 for a Mexicano. A match to 21 points takes about fifteen minutes. Fewer courts than matches? The round is played in several waves, and the others sit out. Playing on time, each round stops at the alarm and you enter the score at that moment.
